ANALYSIS OF HEARING PROTECTION REQUIREMENTS BASED ON NOISE RISK ZONE MAPPING USING THE OSHA DERATING METHOD AT PT X’S OFFSHORE PLATFORM

Abstract

Noise exposure in offshore facilities may pose risks to workers’ safety and health when the exposure level exceeds the Threshold Limit Value (TLV). This study aimed to analyze the distribution of noise levels, identify risk zones based on noise mapping, and determine the need for Hearing Protection Devices (HPDs) using the OSHA derating method at the Central Processing Platform (CPP) and Wellhead Platform (WHP-K) of Kerisi PT X. This study used a descriptive quantitative design with secondary data consisting of 93 noise intensity measurement points obtained from measurements conducted by the company. Noise data were mapped using noisetools.net software with the safety layout as the basemap. Furthermore, hearing protection needs were analyzed using the OSHA derating method for HPDs with Noise Reduction Ratings (NRR) of 25 dB and 33 dB to obtain residual exposure levels below the TLV. The results showed that noise intensity ranged from 62.6 to 99.3 dBA. All measurement points at the WHP-K facility were below the TLV, while at the CPP facility, 36 out of 72 measurement points were above the TLV, with the highest noise levels found at the Intermediate Deck of the CPP. OSHA derating estimates that HPDs with NRR 25 dB are likely to reduce exposure below the TLV at 28 points (86.0–94.0 dBA), while NRR 33 dB may do so at 5 points (94.1–98.0 dBA). At 3 Intermediate Deck CPP points, single protection is not expected to reduce exposure below the TLV. The company can use the mapping to predict HPD adjustments, while extreme-exposure areas are recommended to use double protection and additional controls.
